Stories Behind the Songs: Disenchanted
January 28, 2008
This song is the nails that hold together my soapbox. It is the eight cylinder engine that propels this album. It is the confused faces that linger in my mind and remind me of why we are sacrificing so much to tell their story.
To hear more about that heartbeat, read the Story Behind the Band Name.
For all of those who are bitter in the shadow of the pulpit. Broken in the shadow of the cross. Disillusioned. Disenchanted.
verse one
Freedom and faith / we talk of mercy and grace
But with our Pharisee face / do we live what we say on Sunday
Do I deny / this Jesus who died
My self and my pride/ fights for this comfortable place.
verse two
Out in the streets / a crowd of terminal needs
All the brokenness bleeds / for a hand to stretch their direction
Do we pass by / shattered fragmented lives
God hears their cries / and watches us walk away…
pre-chorus
Nakedness and grace are the universal language.
Blinders hide the guilt and the shame that we all came with.
Masses huddled down, drowned out by the church bells
And we think we do so well…
chorus
Disenchanted / A generation recanted
Judgmental stances / turned the lost away.
Revolution / in the soul’s evolution
Make the truth known / you [he] can burn your past away.
verse three
Beyond our four walls / and angry silence still calls
From the ones who were lost / to regulations of our religion
Do we deny / this freedom inside
And live by the lie / that we have something to give.
bridge
We fall down. They fall away
