Organic Living

February 27, 2008

Another of my 2008 ventures has been to increase our health awareness, both for Dan and I as well as the girls. In a culture that glorifies the anorexic silhouette, it requires an interactive effort to create a balanced and wholesome body image in this emerging generation of girls. And so we have begun to exercise and play outdoor sports consistently and to involve the girls in healthy dietary choices.
After understudying a nutrition specialist at the Y, I set off for the grocery store with a long list of toxic sins to avoid and vitamin-rich alternatives. The girls actually enjoyed reading labels and searching the aisles for whole grains and 100% Vitamin B as though on a massive scavenger hunt in Walmart! We brought home our victorious finds, and now tonight dove into Cooking Night.

This is a new endeavor as well, where we pull out all of our pots and ingredients and storage containers and in one evening cook all of the meals to freeze. (it really cuts down on the dishes overall!) So I cut vegetables while Larken and Alayna opened cans and Emilie made pizza dough. We sauteed chicken and boiled pasta, decorated pizzas and simmered chili! After 2 steamy hours over the stove, we have Cheezy Broccoli & Spinach Casserole, Three Bean Chili, Lasagna, Ginger Chicken Soup, Turkey Tarragon Salad and 4 Black Olive Pizzas. And the dishes are all done! Whew!

Here are the proud (and organic!) chefs!

Today’s texture

February 13, 2008

Today I stumbled across a new design for my stationery project. It began with a family tree painting on a paint which (thanks to technology) I then transferred into photoshop. I was able to overlay the tree design into other photo and art designs creating an entirely new line of cards. I think they express vibrant color and texture while representing a variety of themes. And I’m only just beginning…

Productivity

February 12, 2008

As mass chaos ensues around me, I sit to etch out in pixels this, my first blog about nothing and everything. Radio theatre pipes through the stereo on my left, dinner dishes clatter from the sink just beyond this room, and three children, two cats and a dog endlessly fill these red walls with activity and fingerprints and chaos indeed! But in the midst of it all, I strive to establish structure and create memories and perhaps even stumble across moments of productivity.

The new year has brought new challenges and new endeavors alike. In addition to nurturing a marriage, shaping three hearts and minds every day, fulfilling homeschooling tasks, working at the Y, maintaining a house, pursuing personal fitness, engaging friendships, and writing, recording, and performing a freshman album, I have launched a new business featuring my art. It makes for longer days and more cups of pitifully weak coffee (oh, the bitterness!), but I fall into bed happy and thankful and satisfied, and so I get up again the next day to run the path a little further.

Through this outlet, I hope to keep family and friends informed and entertained with the humorous and/or inspiring nuances of life in prose and pictures. For today, I will sign off with a picture of the children framed with some of my recent work…
